This legendary trade route is not a single road; it has many branches, linking all the corners of Asia and Europe. One of the most important branches passes through Central Asia. It is considered that Chinese started to produce silk over five thousand years ago. A thousand years later the multitude of local routes were joined together and led to development of long-distance road network across Asia. In that period silk was the unit of trade. There is a misconception that the Silk Road connected the most important cities on its way. On the contrary, ancient cities became great when the road passes through. The Silk Road went through time as caravans of camels, horses and men carried not only silk from the Orient, but also gun powder and the first ever printed word from China, leading by merchants, or the Mongols horde invasion, bringing devastation and prosperity in turns. Outstanding early explorers walked along the road of merchants to see the East. Now we can complete in a few days the journey that once took weeks and months.  |
