Wild life Activities Places Zones Getting to and around Seasons Tours
There are four more or less distinct and popular areas relatively close to the main (and only) road from Petropavlovsk up to the north. Here they are, from north to south.
- Klyuchevsky Group, several high, glaciated volcanoes soaring above the austere volcanic moonscapes and tundras.
- Kronotsky Nature Reserve, a specially preserved territory, one of the World Nature Heritage sites. The white cone of the Kronotsky volcano, mirrored in the lake of the same name, plus the famous Geyser Valley, are alone worth the trouble and expense of the trip.
- Nalychevo National Park, no less scenic and varied terrain than Kronotsky, but more popular and "civilized".
- South Group, the area around Petropavlovsk with three volcanoes (Avachinsky, Koryaksky and Aag) in its "backyard", which makes them much more accessible than the rest. You are more likely to meet people when walking, climbing or rafting here.
The fifth area is the southernmost part of the peninsula. No roads there, so it is only by helicopter that you can get to Kurilskoye Lake, where the density of bare population is the highest in Kamchatka. Note that going from north to south weather conditions tend to worsen, offering much more rain and wind than in the center.
