It flourished in the 16th century as the capital of the Khans of Khiva whose territory stretched from the Caspian sea to India. The center of the city "Ichon Kala" is walled and nowadays is an open-air museum, one of the World Heritage Sites announced by UNESCO. It consists of narrow medieval streets lined with madrassahs, mosques, caravanserais and tea houses. Do not miss the "Kuhna Ark", old fortress which was the Khans residence with its magnificent summer mosque and harem, the Juma Mosque with its 218 wooden pillars, the Allakuli Khan Medressa and Caravanserai. Khiva population is over forty thousand people – a small Asian town keeping the spirit of medieval ages. |
