The Trans-Ili Alatau (Zailiskii Alatau) belongs to the most northern ridge of the Tien Shan mountains. In the ancient times the name Alatau (in Kazakh means “colorful”) were given by the local nomads and Zailiskii were given by the outstanding Russian explorer Semenov-Tienshansky. It means beyond the Ili River in Russian. 

The Northern Tien Shan began forming more than ten million years ago. And they rise five millimeters annually. The range stretches for nearly four hundred kilometers from east to west within 130 kilometers range which whole is over four thousand meters. Peak Talgar (5017 m) the highest peak of the Zailiskii Alatau. It’s supposed the Mongols hordes of Genghis Khan gave the name to this good visible from the steppes mount – Talgar means “flat” in Mongol. 

There are several beauty areas in the Northern Tien Shan within easy reach: near by Almaty Chimbulak ski resort; Big Almaty Lake, like a blinking mirror, surrounded on all sides by magnificent peaks; Turgen gorge with spectacular waterfalls. 

There are brilliant possibilities for easy walks as well as the most demanding treks like trekking to Issyk-Kul Lake through the Northern Tien Shan or climbing to Peak Talgar.
