Nowadays Uzbekistan is bordered by such Asian countries as Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, straddling the Tien Shan and the Pamirs mountains and Kyzyl Kum (Uzbek: “red sand”) Desert. The capital is Tashkent, where were issued the declaration of independence of the republic in 1991.
