Khabarovsk History

Strategically located on the hills overlooking the Amur River, Khabarovsk was founded as a military outpost, during the first wave of Russian colonization. The town gained importance during the nineteenth century as a trading outpost, and today it is one of the most important and promising cities of the Russian Far East. Khabarovsk is a pleasant city, with wide, tree-lined boulevards, a popular beach. It is important to point out that much of the history and culture of the area is strongly tied to its many indigenous peoples.

Things to see and do

Regional Museum includes displays on the natural history of the Far East. The history of these peoples is well preserved not only in the museum but in the settlements of the region and around Khabarovsk.

Outside of the city, 70 km to the North-East of Khabarovsk there is a small village. Since ancient times it has been inhabited by the Nanai people whose main activity was and is fishing. The population of the village is 800 people. Sikachi-Alyan is famous for its petroglyphs. Various pictures, which are images of people, birds and wild animals are carved on the rocks of Sikachi-Alyan. Not far from the village there is a Tourist Complex “Welcome”, featuring an open-air museum of the Nanai early history.

Tour includes visiting museums, petroglyphs or rock carvings. The highlight is the folk show, performed by the local children.
