Krasnoyarsk History

One of the older towns in Siberia, Krasnoyarsk was founded in 1628 as a trading post along the Yenisei River. It grew rapidly when gold was discovered in the region, and eventually became a major river port and industrial center. The Trans-Siberian road passing through Krasnoyarsk gave a boost to industrial development of the city, especially metal production, oil, and construction industries.

During World War II a lot of plants from central Russia area were evacuated to Krasnoyarsk. The city is also famous because of general Lebed, who was the governor of Krasnoyarsk region in the end of 90s. He died in a helicopter crash in 2002, but local people respect him and relate a lot of improvements in the city life to his governance.

Things to see and do

Outside the city is the Stolby Reserve, an attractive preserve notable for the odd, columnar cliffs that rise from the river's edge inside its area. This Rocky Pillars (Stolby) Reserve is a very interesting geological phenomena and product of intensive volcanic activities millions of years ago. We can only imagine what was happening during that time. Scientists suggest that volcanic eruptions of Siberian Plato was so intense and widespread, it covered the sun with ashes for many years causing distinction of dinosaurs.

The pillars itself are relics of magma intrusion process. The ones we see today in the Park penetrated the Earth's crust and crystallized in the shape of pillars. The hardness of this intrusions is what is very unique. There are about 100 pillars in the Park, some reach 100 meters (328 feet) high. Many have names for their unique shapes. All together, the pillars and beautiful surrounding mountains covered with taiga forest make the Reserve a top destination for climbing, sightseeing and hiking.

If you are in Krasnoyarsk you would definitely have to not miss the Krasnoyarsk Hydro Electric Power Station (Dam). This dam is located 40 km upstream of the city.

The next place for stop might be Ovsyanka village. This is where very famous and talented Russian writer Victor Astafiev lived and die in 2001. He sponsored building of an excellent small wooden church in his home-village. Nowadays his name is very important in Russian literature and culture. Visiting Ovsyanka is also nice opportunity to see a life of Siberian village and traditional old houses.

Krasnoyarsk regional Museum has an excellent range of displays on local history and culture. Exhibits include a full-scale replica of a boat used by the Cossack explorers of the area, and a fine ethnographical section.

At Surikov Museum-estate you will enter another world of Siberian tranquility.

Surikov Art Museum – there is more of Surikov’s work on show, along with other Russian art ranging from the 18th to 20th centuries
